History

On April 29, 1960, the 16th session of Shanghai Municipal People's Committee determined to establish Shanghai Part-time Industry University. In 1965, the school was renamed Shanghai Part-Work and Part-Study Industry University, which set up an example for full-time work-study system. Approved by CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, the name was changed back to Shanghai Part-time Industry University on December 5, 1972. On July 25, 1984, Shanghai Municipal People's Government decided to change the name of the school to Shanghai Second Polytechnic University, which became the pioneer of continuing education. On November 20, 2001, approved by Shanghai Municipal People's Government, the university merged with Shanghai Donghu Vocational & Technical College to form the new Shanghai Second Polytechnic University, holding the banner of developing higher vocational education. For more than 60 years since its establishment, the university has been persisting in serving social development and economic construction, and committed to training technical and applied talents. So far, it has produced more than 110,000 various technical and applied talents for the modernization of Shanghai, represented by the national model workers and outstanding inventors Bao Qifan and Li Bin. The university is honored as “Cradle of Model Workers” and “Further Education Platform for Senior Technical Talents”.
