SSPU and B&R Industrial Automation jointly established Shanghai Polytechnic University & B&R Process Control Co-Labor which was put it into full operation in January 2009. On January 8, 2009, the unveiling ceremony of the Co-Lab was grandly held at Shanghai Polytechnic University. With the usage area of 300 square meters, the Co-Lab was originally located in the then Engineering Training Center of the university. The total assets of the laboratory reach over RMB 4 million, including the relevant equipment valued at about RMB 1.8 million donated by B&R. Furthermore, the Co-Lab has collaborated with Professor Zhao Nan from University College Dublin to conduct research in the field of industrial intelligent control, focusing on electric vehicle drive systems, power grids with high penetration of renewable energy, and the modeling and design of energy storage systems.

The Co-Lab established in the collaboration between B&R and the School of Intelligent Manufacturing and Control Engineering has been operating for 16 years. It has played a critical role in developing application-oriented talents in automation engineering by enhancing their practical skills in process control technology. Since the beginning of September 2006, each batch of student majoring in Automation has engaged in experimental and practical training in this laboratory for courses like Process Control Technology, Automation Instrumentation and Systems, Computer Control Technology, Comprehensive Process Control Training, and conducted graduation projects as well.

Over the years of operation, engineers from B&R have worked collaboratively with SSPU faculty to ensure the proper functioning of the laboratory equipment. The laboratory was relocated to its new location in Room 606, Building 29 in 2023.
