From March 28 to 29, theInternational Conference on Academic Research in Multinational Enterprises and Global Value Chains was held online. The conference was jointly hosted by SSPU and Economic Modelling, a scholarly journal, and organized by SSPU Schoolof Economics and Management (SEM).
Participants of the event included SSPU Vice President Ding Li, heads and teachers from SEM and SSPU branch of Shanghai Overseas Returned Scholars Association, experts and scholars from East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL), Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), Shanghai University of International Business and Economics (SUIBE), Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance (SLU), Hubei University (HUBU) and other domestic universities, and overseas scholars from theUniversity of Warwick(Warwick), U.K.,Queen Mary University of London(QMUL), U.K.,University of Reading, U.K., Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), etc. Prof. Yang Yong from SEM presided over the conference.

SSPU Vice President Ding Li delivered the opening speech. He said the international conference is one of the important conferences, which discusses multinational enterprises, global value chains and the increasingly significant role that developing countries play in the global economy. It is an honor to have renowned academic experts, professors and scholars from home and abroad join us. Global value chain is an effective tool for multinational enterprises in developing countries to manage cross-border businesses, which is especially of great importance under the uncertain circumstance of Covid-19 pandemic. This conference is expected to contribute a part to the academic dialogue about global value chains.

Focusing on the theme of Multinational Enterprises and Global Value Chains, domestic and overseas scholars shared their ideas, experience and research achievements in international development and economic and financial area, and had an all-round and in-depth discussion on relevant researches.

On the meeting held on March 28, Prof, Nigel Driffield and Prof. Sushanta Mallick gave keynote speeches respectively on Global value chains, innovation and FDI location – a critique of the literature, and Knowledge spillovers and productivity effects. At the presentation session, Yu Chunjiao, Zhao Jiaqi and Cheng Shi from Hubei University shared ideas on GVC trade and the business cycle synchronization between China and Belt-Road countries; Yama Temouri from Khalifa University, UAE and Aston Business School, U.K., Vijay Pereira from NEOMA Business School, France, Rahul Sindhwani and Sushmit Bagchi from Indian Institute of Management, Amritsar, India, and Abhishek Behl from Management Development Institute, New Delhi, India, respectively gave a speech on Analysis of inhibitors in a path of building resilience in global value chain for MNEs. Ashish Gosain from Jawaharlal Nehru University, India, and Saon Ray from ICRIER shared their views on Integration of Indian inventor networks in global value chains in pharmaceuticals industry.

On the meeting on March 29, Prof. Yang Yong from SSPU SEMand Prof. Sushanta Mallick from QMUL delivered a keynote speech respectively on Global Value Chains and the Rising Role of Developing Countries and How to Publish in Economic Modelling. At the presentation session, experts and scholars from Shanghai Maritime University, Anhui University, Shanghai International Studies University, Hunan University, East China University of Political Science and Law, Tongji University, Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance and Shanghai University of International Business and Economics shared ideas on topics including Global value chain reconstruction in the post-pandemic era andChina's countermeasures: A case study of the maritime industry, Research on China's deep participation in global value chain: innovation strategy under the dual cycle, etc. After in-depth discussions among all participants, Prof. Yang Yong gave a concluding speech.
